The model is a cube transformed into a sphere. A square texture is superimposed on each side of the cube. Each of the six texture segments has a resolution of 4096*4096 px. The texture is overlaid on the model using UV sweep. Using this approach avoids strong distortions at the poles, as when using rectangular textures overlaid on a sphere.
