What is a cubemap?

A cubemap is a set of six square images representing the six directions of a 3D environment: front, back, left, right, top and bottom.

A cubemap is commonly created from an equirectangular panorama or a 360-degree image. The six generated faces can be used as a skybox, environment texture, background or reflection map.

What does this cubemap converter do?

This free online cubemap converter transforms a 2:1 equirectangular panorama into six cubemap faces directly in your browser.

The image is processed locally on your device and is not uploaded to the website or VPS. You can adjust cube rotation, interpolation and output format, then download the generated faces individually.

JPEG vs PNG vs TIFF

JPEG

JPEG is suitable for photographic panoramas and ordinary 360-degree images. It provides relatively small files but uses lossy compression. Repeated editing or saving may reduce image quality.

PNG

PNG uses lossless compression and is suitable when you need clean edges, transparency or a visually identical copy of the source. PNG files are usually larger than JPEG files.

TIFF

TIFF is commonly used in professional imaging, GIS, mapping, printing and texture workflows. It can preserve higher bit depth and may contain additional image information, but TIFF files are usually much larger and require more memory to process.

What is the difference between 8-bit and 16-bit?

An 8-bit image stores up to 256 tonal values per color channel. It is sufficient for most web graphics, games, previews and standard skyboxes.

A 16-bit image stores up to 65,536 tonal values per channel. It is useful for professional textures, scientific visualization, GIS, height maps, color grading and workflows where smooth gradients and additional tonal precision are important.

A 16-bit output does not automatically improve an 8-bit source. The source image must already contain additional tonal information to benefit from 16-bit processing.

What are cubemap presets?

A preset defines how the six generated faces are named and organized for a particular workflow.

  • Generic cubemap — neutral names such as px, nx, py, ny, pz, nz.
  • Unity — names and orientation suitable for Unity environment or skybox workflows.
  • Unreal Engine — naming and face order adapted for Unreal Engine workflows.
  • Three.js / WebGL — useful for loading six images into a WebGL cubemap texture.
  • Skybox — six faces — a simple six-image set for skybox backgrounds and 3D viewers.

Presets usually affect filenames, face order and delivery structure. They do not necessarily change the underlying projection.

Can I convert an equirectangular image to a cubemap?

Yes. The input should normally have a 2:1 aspect ratio, for example 4096 × 2048 or 8192 × 4096 pixels.

What is the maximum free file size?

The free browser version supports files up to 50 MB and images up to 8192 × 4096 pixels.

Why can’t very large panoramas be processed in the browser?

Large images require significant RAM for decoding, projection and rendering six faces at once. The browser may limit memory usage, especially on mobile devices. A large TIFF can also require several times more working memory than its file size suggests.

Can I convert a TIFF panorama?

TIFF and large TIFF files are available by request. Contact me for manual conversion on a local workstation.

Can I create 16-bit cubemap faces?

Yes, 16-bit output is available by request. It is intended for professional imaging, GIS, visualization, texture and color-grading workflows.

Can I create a cubemap for Unity?

Yes. I can prepare six faces with Unity-compatible naming and organization. Contact me if you need a specific Unity skybox workflow.

Can I create a cubemap for Unreal Engine?

Yes. Unreal Engine-compatible face naming and organization can be prepared manually for large, TIFF or 16-bit source files.

Can I use the generated images in Three.js or WebGL?

Yes. The six faces can be loaded as a cubemap texture in Three.js or another WebGL application. The correct face order depends on the rendering workflow.

What is a skybox cubemap?

A skybox cubemap is a six-sided environment texture used to create a background surrounding a 3D scene. Each face represents one viewing direction.

Does the converter upload my image?

The free browser converter processes JPEG and PNG files locally in your browser. The source image is not sent to WordPress or the VPS.

Why are my cubemap faces empty or misaligned?

Common causes include an incorrect panorama aspect ratio, a non-equirectangular source, an incorrect cube rotation or an unsuitable face order for the target engine.

Can you convert a file larger than 50 MB?
